For centuries, people have wondered about the brightest star, Sirius.
Known as the ‘Dog Star’, Sirius is most visible during a time when the northern hemisphere is uncomfortably hot – the ‘Dog Days of Summer’.
Greek poets connected Sirius with the overwhelming heat & fever, and Hellenistic astrology thought the star’s return heralded drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs and bad luck.
In the Iliad, Homer wrote:
Sirius rises late in the dark, liquid sky
On summer nights, star of stars,
Orion's Dog they call it, brightest
Of all, but an evil portent, bringing heat
And fevers to suffering humanity.
Today, the earth is scorching through record-braking temperatures across the globe. And humanity is struggling with the changes we must make, to ensure these dog days don’t get worse.
